Must foreign spouses, parents, or children renounce nationality for Vietnamese naturalization?

Conditions for being permitted to get Vietnamese naturalization

1. Foreign citizens and stateless persons who are permanently residing in Vietnam and applying for Vietnamese naturalization may be permitted to get Vietnamese naturalization if they meet the following conditions:

a) Have full civil act capacity according to the provisions of Vietnamese law;

b) Comply with the Constitution and laws of Vietnam; respect the traditions, customs and practices of the Vietnamese people;

c) Know Vietnamese sufficiently to integrate into the Vietnamese community;

d) Have permanently resided in Vietnam for 5 years or more up to the time of applying for Vietnamese naturalization;

dd) Have the ability to ensure their livelihood in Vietnam.

2. A person applying for Vietnamese naturalization may be permitted to get Vietnamese naturalization without satisfying the conditions prescribed at Points c, d and dd, Clause 1 of this Article, if he/she falls into one of the following cases:

a) Be the wife, husband, biological father, mother or biological child of Vietnamese citizens;

b) Have special merits contributing to the cause of building and defense of the Vietnamese Fatherland;

c) Be beneficial to the State of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

3. Persons who get Vietnamese naturalization must renounce their foreign nationality, except for persons prescribed in Clause 2 of this Article, in special cases, if permitted by the State President.

4. A person applying for Vietnamese naturalization must have a Vietnamese name. This name is chosen by the person applying for Vietnamese naturalization and clearly stated in the Decision on permission for Vietnamese naturalization.

5. A person applying for Vietnamese naturalization may not be permitted to get Vietnamese naturalization if it is detrimental to Vietnam’s national interests.

6. The Government stipulates in detail the conditions for being permitted to get Vietnamese naturalization.

Therefore, in cases where a foreign national or a foreign citizen who is the wife, husband, biological father, biological mother or biological child of a Vietnamese citizen applies for Vietnamese naturalization, he/she must renounce his/her foreign nationality, except for special cases, if so permitted by the State President of Vietnam.
